AI-supported media analysis: best practices from the cooperation between Landau Media and MORESOPHY

Landau Media, a leading provider of media monitoring in the DACH region, and moresophy, a specialist in Explainable AI, have established a strategic partnership since mid-2023. Their common goal: to make media analysis more efficient and comprehensive with customized AI solutions.

Founded in 1997, the Berlin-based company Landau Media analyzes not only print and online media for around 3,600 clients, but also broadcast and social media content. Together with moresophy, Landau Media develops innovative approaches to accelerate the analysis and processing of media content using AI.


In search of the needle in the (data) haystack

Depending on the task, Landau Media evaluates several thousand messages. This enormous manual effort had to be automated – with the right AI approach. However, generic AI models quickly reach their limits when it comes to the very specific topics and messages of customers. Another challenge is analyzing the tonality of clippings: nuances in the context must be interpreted correctly so as not to distort the sentiment. Generic analysis based on keywords falls far short here.

“Whether and which type of AI model is suitable for a specific use case depends on the client’s individual question,” reports Eike Tölle, Head of Consulting/Head of Media Analysis & Insights at Landau Media. “In addition, the success of AI models depends on the availability of relevant, high-quality and representative data. Licensing issues relating to the use of AI could bring additional momentum to the market in the future.”


Key use cases for AI in media monitoring

With this in mind, Landau Media specifically looked for providers of AI-supported automation solutions that are capable of customized and context-sensitive training of AI models.

moresophy was chosen because the company not only has more than 20 years of expertise in the fields of AI, machine learning and data analytics, but is also very familiar with the subject matter of media content. Another plus point: moresophy’s data processing is GDPR-compliant within Europe.

Together, moresophy and Landau Media are testing both analytical and explorative AI approaches for various tasks in media analysis. As part of this partnership, Landau Media is already providing coded data sets via API as training data for moresophy’s context-sensitive AI models. The AI-based enrichment of media content with diverse metadata gives moresophy an efficiency advantage for frequent work processes in media monitoring.

Initial pilot projects have shown promising application possibilities, in particular:

  • AI-supported coding of customer messages: From a data volume of 100 to 150 messages per month, AI-supported training offers noticeable efficiency advantages compared to the manual coding of topics, messages or sentiments, for example.
  • Similarity comparisons: Here, the extent to which reports can be traced back to press releases, for example, is analyzed; it can also be checked whether the reports have been edited or whether the press releases have been adopted 1-to-1.
  • Article separation: AI makes it easier to locate the mention of a customer more precisely within an e-paper and to identify and analyze individual articles instead of entire pages.
  • AI as a trend radar

The “holy grail” of AI-supported media analysis is the explorative approach, for example when analyzing current and future topic trends. The detection of weak signals potentially represents great added value for clients, as it enables them to identify business opportunities and risks in the media landscape at an early stage. Landau Media and moresophy are working on an AI-supported trend radar.
