Why AI Regulations Promote Innovation

The opinion article by Prof. Dr. Heiko Beier published in Tagesspiegel Background dispels the widespread prejudice that EU regulation is a brake on artificial intelligence in the financial sector. Instead, he uses concrete examples, from AI agents and autonomous decisions to sensitive financial data, to show that clear guidelines from the AI Act, FiDA or BaFin are what make it possible to use AI responsibly, scalably and economically.

Beier specifically addresses the risks of an unregulated use of AI. He questions the common criticism of regulations and makes it clear why transparency, verifiability and compliance do not act as restrictions, but rather as key drivers for sustainable innovation. At the same time, he argues that regulation is not the end, but the starting point for resilient AI and that companies that incorporate these rules at an early stage can gain a strategic advantage.
