GVL optimizes data processes with AI expertise from MORESOPHY

Gesellschaft zur Verwertung von Leistungsschutzrechten (GVL) is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to optimize its data processes. In collaboration with moresophy GmbH, it is improving the processing and analysis of large amounts of data in order to continuously increase the precision of rights management. In addition to the recording industry, the main beneficiaries are artists who are remunerated by GVL for the use of their performances.

GVL is one of the largest collecting societies in Germany and has been administering the neighbouring rights of performers, producers of sound recordings, event organizers and music video producers since 1959. It is committed to ensuring that these rights holders receive appropriate remuneration for the use of their creative work – for example in broadcasting or public performances.

The company relies on high-quality and agile workflows in terms of data management and analytics in order to guarantee the high level of processes in rights exploitation. With increasing digitalization and the multitude of platforms, the processing and analysis of usage data is becoming ever more complex. Every year, GVL records around 20 million usage reports and more than 45 million broadcast minutes. To achieve the best possible results, the company also relies on a partner with many years of experience and in-depth expertise in AI-supported data analytics. This is why GVL has been working successfully with AI specialist moresophy since 2017 to ensure high data quality and further develop data-based processes.

Higher matching rate through AI

An outstanding field of application of the collaboration with moresophy is the optimization of matching processes between usage reports with repertoire data. Since 2019, moresophy has supported GVL with a highly developed matching logic and delivered more than 1.2 million highly precise matching suggestions. This has enabled GVL to increase its matching rate by more than 15 percent between 2019 and today.

In addition to improving matching, moresophy has developed over 90 dashboards with GVL, including a large number for internal data management. These make it possible to continuously monitor data quality, identify discrepancies at an early stage and carry out in-depth analyses on the exploitation of rights. For example, departments can see which royalties have already been paid and which are still outstanding in order to better manage payments for artists and producers. It is also easier to track participations in musical works, which speeds up the processing of subsequent notifications or corrections. The dashboards provide a quick overview of the most valuable music uses at any time and make it possible to immediately assess the impact of current music uses on payments to artists and producers. This allows measures and resources to be optimized in a targeted manner.

Jens-Peter Conring, Head of Product & Service Innovation at GVL, emphasizes the importance of the collaboration: “Thanks to the highly developed data analytics used together with moresophy, GVL is now able to record and evaluate all information on the exploitation of rights with the highest precision and speed. This benefits our artists and producers of sound recordings in particular.

Successful implementation of NEUSTART KULTUR

In addition to optimizing ongoing data management, moresophy also proved itself in the rapid implementation of complex projects. During the pandemic, the company supported GVL in handling the NEUSTART KULTUR project, a GVL grant program for artists in 2021. moresophy developed several digital portals as a full-service provider within a few months, which seamlessly mapped the entire process – from the submission of applications to the automated review to the final payment of the grants. Thanks to the automation, more than 5,400 applications were efficiently checked and approved and the funding was paid out on time. moresophy also integrated a system for in-depth checks required by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).

Future-oriented cooperation

The AI-supported optimization of GVL data management has already enabled noticeable increases in efficiency. The use of artificial intelligence is to be further expanded in 2025, particularly through predictive analyses. The focus will be on the further development of dashboards with integrated forecasting functions that precisely estimate the impact of music usage on the distribution of funds to artists and producers and improve data-based rights exploitation in a targeted manner.

Heiko Beier, founder and managing director of moresophy, emphasizes: “Our long-standing partnership with GVL impressively demonstrates how artificial intelligence can make data-intensive processes more efficient and precise. With intelligent matching algorithms, data-driven dashboards and predictive analyses, we are jointly setting new standards for data-driven rights exploitation.

About GVL

Anyone who creates something artistic or provides the economic basis for this must receive money for the use of their work. The Gesellschaft zur Verwertung von Leistungsschutzrechten mbH (GVL) records this use. GVL forwards the money collected in trust from radio and television broadcasters and for public reproduction (e.g. in restaurants or cafés) to its rightholders as remuneration. More than 180,000 performing artists, producers of visual and audio recordings, music and video clip producers as well as event organizers worldwide trust GVL – making it one of the largest collecting societies for neighbouring rights worldwide.
